The Team
Dr. Bushra is working on triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which have the potential to contribute to the future development of self-powered systems and sustainable energy solutions. TENGs can have various applications including self-powered sensors, wearable electronics, and energy harvesting from ambient mechanical vibrations and motions.

Ex-Marie Curie Fellow Under the NaMeS program of European Horizon 2020, did PhD from the Polish Academy of Sciences—expertise in molecularly imprinting polymers, electrochemical sensor fabrication, and 3D-organoid formation. Currently working on Immune cell membrane vesicle as a bioelectronic platform to study the macrophage/inflammation axis, cystic fibrosis management, and biofilm on-chip. Also, exploring the interactions of 2D materials like MXene with Extracellular Vesicles at the bio-interface level

Dr. Anna-Maria Pappa is an Asst. Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at KU and PI in the Lab BBC. Her current research interests lie in bio-integrated electronics, using polymeric semiconductors and synthetic biology to develop hierarchically organized biological models for point-of-care sensors.

Sagar Arya has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Deakin University (Australia), specializing in the field of bioengineering. Sagar has a diverse skill set in the area of biochemistry and material science, with expertise in studying pathogenic bacteria, plant cell culture, bioactive compounds, and nanomaterials. Currently, Sagar is engaged in researching bacteria-based solutions, to explore innovative ways to address challenges in the area of drug testing.

Sarah A. Alkhatib, a Ph.D. student passionate about biocatalysis and sustainability! On a mission to revolutionize enzyme development and develop novel enzyme biocatalysts and enhancing their capabilities. Immobilization of the biocatalysts on carefully designed metallic/organic frameworks will offer higher catalytic performance.

Her project focuses on the development of bioelectronic devices to mimic and monitor biological systems for applications in medicine. Jawaher is our former MSc student and current PhD student. Her MSc project was "Cystic Fibrosis Lab-on-chip device" to study the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator for personalized medicine.

Rasha Nasser got her Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering from Khalifa University and her Master's degree in Microbiology Immunology from UAEU. Her research revolves around the utilization of microfluidic chips as versatile platforms to replicate pathophysiological conditions in living biological systems. In conjunction, Rasha explores the significance of conducting polymer scaffolds as vital tools for cultivating and monitoring 3D cell cultures

Deema Islayem received her M.Sc. degree in biomedical engineering in 2021. She is currently pursuing her PhD in biomedical engineering at Khalifa university, Abu Dhabi, UAE. Her research expertise is in mammalian and bacterial cell culture, biofilm, exosomes, RNA, microfluidics, and biosensor. She is currently working on developing microfluidic and biosensing chip as a platform for real-time, continuous, and accurate detection of biofilm in their natural environment.

Maha has a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, and will be working with Dr. Anna-Maria in collaboration with the Biology department on extracellular vesicle (EV) production, and primarily the interaction of these cells/EVs with MXene.
Nada Morsi
MSc Student
Nada our Msc student aims to develop a biomimetic platform, "the 2D-BioMemFET", which combines a 2D transistor with human cell-derived plasma membranes. The cell membrane proteins act as bio-receptors, and the 2D transistor as a sensitive transducer that responds to binding events. This platform offers a tunable, robust alternative for characterizing protein binding events in point-of-care diagnostics, surpassing current methods.
